Governor Jerry Brown made California the fourth state in the US on Monday to allow physician assisted dying. Yes, only the fourth, and it's disappointing that the numbers (or the lack of) overshadow the real achievement. Everyone has the right to live, and everyone should have the right to die. Of course life is sacred, but the opponents of this law must not seriously think that California's true intentions are to have a genocide. They simply just want to help those people who have no hope of a cure, and are suffering. That's it, there is no story here, Everyone is allowed to make their decisions about their life and body. If you can go and get an abortion from a professional, you should also be able to go to your doctor to die. They are there to help you and to lessen your pain. In any way possible. Of course we support that background checks must take place, and several doctors (including psychologists) should sign off before you are allowed to die. You sho...
France held the first round of it's regional elections yesterday, resulting in a historic win for Marine Le Pen's National Front. In the first electoral test since last month's attacks on Paris, Le Pen triumphed by winning in her own region, and carrying 5 other races out of 12. Next Sunday, things could change in the second round, but the odds are in the National Front's favour. Whatever the results will be, it is clear that France is now a three party system.
The people of France have raised their voices, and it is clear what they want. Just like in America, the anti-establishment sentiment is fast gaining ground. After the attacks on Paris that left 130 people dead, security has become the most important topic for people. Despite President Hollande's strong and confident response, his party couldn't do better than the third place. Former President Nicolas Sarkozy's party, The Republicans, have came second in a race that is seen as a very important pit stop to the Presidential Elections that will occur within 18 months.
While it is clear that the National Front was able to gain a lot from the terrorist attacks, the economy is still a big part of people's decision. France still shows a lot of signs if the recent recession, and while the economy started to grow, the common people still feel worse off.
And Marine Le Pen was clearly able to tap into that as well. Next Monday, we'll know more.
President Hollande's party, the Socialists, have already announced that they have given up the contest in two regions, in order for the Republicans to have a better chance to beat the National Front. On the other hand, Sarkozy has refused to do the same in the regions where the Socialists came second, increasing the possibility of a continued National Front success. Analysts say, that if he were to do that, it would only enforce Le Pen's message of the corrupt establishment parties doing anything they desire to stay in power. She has got a point there. In fact she has many points, so it is easy to see why she is so popular today.
While Sarkozy came second, this election could also be seen as a blow to him and his aspirations. After the last elections, he took a break of two years, but over a year ago he returned to politics. He was elected as the leader of the UMP party, and then rebranded it as the Republicans. This election was supposed to complete his return, and be a stepping stone to him returning to the Presidency. He can still win in round 2, but his plans took a setback now.
The Presidential Elections will take part in the first half of 2017. If something radical doesn't happen, and there is always a chance that it will, it looks like President Hollande will be a one term President. After narrowly defeating Sarkozy in 2012, he doesn't stand much of a chance now. In fact he is even having troubles of making it into the second round. The most likely scenario right now is a Sarkozy-Le Pen battle. And if Le Pen can keep the momentum, she could beat her father's record in 2002 against Jacques Chirac.
However, a lot will happen till then as French politics can be especially turbulent. Though people might start to think about how President Le Pen sounds. After all, it wouldn't be that bad of a thing (especially if people would look at her policies themselves, and not what the biased media keeps repeating to them).
